When I designed the hand knit version of the Fyr Cowl back in 2020, I was inspired by the fluidity and flexibility of mesh grid structures— specifically, the iconic Harry Bertoia Diamond Chair. There’s something about the way that simple rectangular shapes can adapt to movement that still captivates me. I am excited to finally launch the Fyr Cowl machine knit pattern!
Translating that concept into a machine knit version was both a challenge and a joy. This version, designed for a flatbed knitting machine with ribber, allowed me to really play with texture in a new way. The structure is slightly more tailored, the fabric more precise—but the spirit remains the same.

This pattern’s geometry comes to life differently depending on the stitch technique, the tension and even the angle you view it from. And that’s the part I love most—it’s never static. Like the Diamond Chair, it changes depending on who’s wearing it and how.
The yarn I used for this version is Tov DK in color no 19 from Woolfolk. I’ve loved Woolfolk’s yarns for a long time and Tov DK one really elevates the piece. It’s plush and structured with a smoothness that highlights every stitch. You can see it in action as I share the work-in-progress and final shots on Instagram and TikTok.
One of the best parts of this update was working with my five incredible test knitters. Their feedback helped me fine-tune the pattern components and seeing their versions come to life was beyond rewarding!

Based on my own preferences for neck shapes and what I saw during testing, I added a new, smaller size of the Fyr Cowl to the final pattern. The only difference is that it’s tighter around the neck while still easily popping over your head.

If you’re a visual learner or just want a bit of extra support, you’ll appreciate the video that comes with your pattern download. It’s a 14-minute walkthrough that covers:
• how to read directions in a table format
• the traveling rib stitch technique
• construction and seaming
• chart symbols
It’s like having me sitting beside you as you get started—and it makes the whole process feel more approachable. I hope this pattern inspires you to look at familiar forms in new ways—and maybe even try your hand at using your ribber or double bed machine, if you haven’t yet.
