Have you ever wondered what machine knitting is all about—but felt a little intimidated by all those needles and levers? You’re not alone. Whether you’re totally new to knitting or just new to using a machine, Into to Machine Knitting is a beginner-friendly class is designed to make the process feel approachable, hands-on and creatively exciting.
Whether you’re a hand knitter curious about trying something new or a total beginner who’s never cast on a stitch, this class is for you. You don’t need any prior knitting experience—just a little curiosity and a willingness to try something new.
I created this workshop to give students the confidence to dive into machine knitting with real techniques, practice time and helpful tips to take home. Here’s a peek into what we cover and what the experience is really like.
What You’ll Learn
In just three hours, we’ll cover everything you need to feel confident getting started with a machine—specifically the LK150, a great starter machine for new knitters. You’ll learn how the machine works, key terminology and core techniques including:
-
- Stockinette and stripes: Get the feel for how yarn moves through the carriage and how to easily create stripes.
-
- Increasing and decreasing: Learn how to shape your knitting with techniques like full-fashioned shaping.
-
- Lace: Yes, you can make lace on a machine! I’ll show you how.
-
- Mock rib and hand-manipulated ribbing: We’ll practice a few ways to add stretch and structure to your edges and hems.
-
- Cast-on and bind-off methods: So your swatches are finished off cleanly and ready to keep as references.
There’s no pressure to create a finished project in class. Instead, the focus is on learning skills and building confidence through hands-on swatching. You’ll walk away with physical samples of each technique—a reference you can use for future projects.
What to Bring
You don’t need anything but curiosity and an open mind, but here are a few optional things you might find helpful:
-
- A notebook and pen to take notes or sketch ideas
-
- Yarn (sport, DK or worsted) in colors you love
-
- A table lamp if you want extra lighting
Why Take a Class In-Person?
Machine knitting is a skill that’s best learned with hands-on practice. You’ll get live demonstrations, practice time and personalized guidance. Plus, I’ll share helpful tips I’ve picked up over years of knitting and teaching others.
And of course, one of the best parts is getting to connect with other curious creatives who are also excited about making things by hand (or by machine!).
This class is meant to be a warm, creative entry point. I want you to walk away with the knowledge to keep experimenting and the confidence to start creating projects that feel personal, wearable and modern.
Meet Your Instructor
Hi! I’m Terri Martin, founder of T Martin Studio. I’ve worked in the fashion industry as a designer and trend forecaster for over a decade, but my passion is helping knitters of all levels discover the magic of making garments they actually want to wear. I learned machine knitting while studying fashion design and I’ve been hooked ever since. My teaching style is patient and encouraging—because I remember what it felt like to be new to all of this, too.
